Male Breast Reduction (Gynecomastia)

Male breast reduction addresses enlarged breast tissue and chest contour in men. Enlargement can involve glandular tissue, fat and sometimes excess skin. The first step is understanding what is contributing to the change. A surgical consultation is an opportunity to discuss your concerns and possible options; appearance alone does not establish the cause or the right treatment. Discuss your goals and treatment options with Dr. Bernard Salameh.

UNDERSTANDING YOUR OPTIONS

Why evaluation comes before a procedure

Hormonal changes, certain medicines, other drug use and weight can contribute to male breast enlargement. Review your health history, supplements and medications candidly, including steroid use. Your clinician may recommend tests to investigate the cause, including hormone-related testing when appropriate. Do not stop prescribed medicine on your own. Medical treatment or observation may be more appropriate than proceeding directly to surgery.

When surgery may be considered

A discussion may be useful when enlargement persists, breast development has stabilized and the concern remains after appropriate medical evaluation. General health, healing risks, weight and smoking matter. Explain what bothers you about the chest contour and what you hope would change. Candidacy depends on examination and realistic expectations; a photograph or a preferred technique cannot replace that assessment.

Matching the technique to the tissue

Liposuction can address excess fat. Glandular tissue or loose skin may require surgical excision, and some operations combine techniques. Nipple or areola adjustment may be discussed when anatomy calls for it. Ask which tissue is being treated, where the incisions would sit and why the proposed approach fits your chest. These options are not interchangeable, and every plan involves tradeoffs.

Risks and visible tradeoffs

Possible complications include bleeding or hematoma, infection, fluid collections, contour irregularity, asymmetry, poor healing and persistent pain. Nipple or chest sensation can change temporarily or permanently. Anesthesia complications and blood clots are possible, and additional surgery may be needed. Incisions leave permanent scars, even when placed in less conspicuous locations. Discuss your individual risks and the limits of the expected change.

Planning your recovery

Dressings and a support garment may be used, and some patients need a temporary drain. Follow the instructions for incision care, medicines, warning signs and follow-up. Ask about work duties, lifting and exercise rather than assuming all activities resume together. Healing and swelling affect the early appearance, so progress should be assessed over time.

QUESTIONS & ANSWERS

Questions about male breast reduction

Have a question that is not here? Request a consultation to discuss it with your surgeon.

Is every enlarged chest gynecomastia?

No single appearance explains the underlying tissue or cause. An examination helps assess fat, glandular tissue and skin, while medical history and any indicated tests help guide the diagnosis and options.

Is liposuction always enough?

No. It targets fat, while glandular tissue or excess skin may need excision. Your surgeon should explain whether liposuction, excision or a combination is appropriate for your anatomy and goals.

Can surgery be scarless?

Surgery requires incisions. Their placement and extent depend on the correction needed. Scars can become less noticeable as healing progresses, but they are permanent and cannot be promised to disappear.

Can enlargement return?

Future changes remain possible, particularly if contributing medication, drug or weight factors persist. Discuss those factors with your treating clinician and maintain follow-up. Never change prescription treatment without the prescribing clinician’s guidance.
